How To Create Your Own Reality and a Life You Love
A typical day from my past. And maybe your present?
Wake up.
Wish it wasn’t morning yet.
Start listing in my mind all the things I need to do today, especially the things I don’t want to do.
Jump out of bed.
Start doing all the things I don’t want to do while thinking about the things in my life that make me unhappy.
Tell myself to get over it and put one foot in front of the other.
Do some things other people want me to do.
Have some surprise fun and some random laughs in between all my negative creations.
Go to bed.
Repeat.
Do you see what I did? I created a pattern of producing the same negative day for myself, day after day. On autopilot, doing the same things, thinking the same thoughts. Did I even know what I wanted? I clearly knew what I didn’t want, and it’s what I created for myself (and obsessed about) every day.
How do your thoughts create your reality? You’ve probably heard this saying “watch your thoughts, your thoughts become words, watch your words, your words become actions”.What you think influences how you feel. How you feel is an emotion and emotions are the most powerful anchors of memory that we possess. (Need an example of this? Think back to where you were on 9/11. The immense emotions of fear, sadness, shock, and empathy keep that memory seared into your consciousness almost a decade later.) Your brain doesn’t know if what you think and feel is based on fact or fiction. It just accepts that thought and the related emotion, as straight-up truth.
So, when you wake up in the morning and tell yourself that this is going to be another sh*t day, guess what? It’s going to be another sh*t day!If you wake up in the morning and inventory everything you perceive as wrong with your life, you’re reinforcing the thought of everything that is wrong with your life and everything will feel wrong with your life. When you wake up in the morning and recall the conversation you had with your boss the day before and tell yourself you’re an idiot, you’re going to feel like an idiot!
Through this process of ruminating on the past and focusing on the negative, you maintain the same patterns and keep yourself stuck in the past. As Dr. Joe Dispenza says, “When we live in the past, we’re asleep in the present”. It’s like Groundhog Day and your future is simply a replay of your past. Are you having fun yet?
What if you could catch yourself? And be kind? Like the way you’d respond to a friend? Every time you said something negative about yourself, you noticed it and said something true? “I’m not an idiot, my boss is just more concerned with the bottom line so he didn’t like my idea.”“I’m not inept, I’m going to rock that networking event. I’m prepared with fascinating topics and a high-vibe.”“I am enough and if it’s just too much for Chad and he has to put me down, then see ya, Chad.”“I am the master of my fate and the captain of my soul. I’m living a life of intention and joy. I’ll deal with the tough stuff. Period.”Friends, as Marissa Peer says “You make your beliefs and your beliefs make you”. I’m here to tell you that you can change your beliefs.
Start with these two steps:
Step 1: Notice your self talk.
Step 2: When it’s negative, change it!
What if there really are some things wrong with your life? Well, if you’re not changing it, you’re choosing it. Life’s not perfect, we’re not perfect. All we can ask of ourselves is that we show up and do our best. It’s just not cool to keep whining about a situation that you can change. There’s hardly a situation that you can’t change, at least a little. So, take a good hard look. If you can’t see clearly, ask a trusted somebody to look with you. Find the solution. There is one. Then set an intention, set some goals, and go!
How you can be intentional about your thoughts, your actions, and your day.
Analyze, reflect, but don’t obsess. That’s just a time sucker. Set aside some time (even five minutes is enough) every day to set and monitor intentions for change. Reflect on your success. Figure out how to improve what didn’t go well. It’s a process. It won’t change in a day. Be kind to yourself. Keep going.
Wake up and ask yourself, what’s going to go right today? Create a new day, a different day. Wake up and tell yourself what you’re grateful for. Decide what’s going to go right today and plan how to make that happen. Create your own reality and change your life.
